What Causes Toe Deformities?

Podiatrist Bayside NY

Have you been experiencing toe pain while wearing certain shoes? If this feeling sounds all too familiar, you may be dealing with a toe deformity. Our feet and toes are very important parts of our bodies, making us able to walk and do everyday activities that we find joy in. Pain while carrying out these activities can be annoying and stop you from doing the things you love. Here at Great Neck Foot Care Podiatrist Bayside NY, we will spend time with you to diagnose and treat your deformity in a timely manner.

Toe Deformities

Toe Deformities can be congenital, present at birth, or brought on later in life by wearing harmful shoes with zero to no support. They can also be caused by a traumatic foot injury. Below is a list of the different types of toe deformities:

  • Hammertoe: This is the most common toe deformity we see in patients. In this case, the toe will appear bent at the joint, causing it to resemble a hammer. This is commonly seen in the second toe but not unlikely in the big toe as well.
  • Bunion: This is another commonly seen deformity and is often accompanied by a hammertoe. It involves a bony outgrowth on the side of the base along the big toe.
  • Claw Toes: This deformity is only seen in the four little toes and never the big toe. It is a condition in which the toes curl up and then back down at the upper joint causing it to look like an animal claw.
  • Mallet Toe: Mallet Toe is similar to the hammertoe deformity, but this involves the upper joint and not the middle.
