What is the Achilles Tendon?
Your Achilles tendon is a band of muscle that runs down the back of the lower leg and connects the calf muscle to the heel bone. When the tendon is stretched beyond its capacity, a partial or complete tear can occur. Jumping or pivoting, or sudden accelerations in running can overstretch the tendon. An injury to the tendon can also result from tripping or falling. Frequently this injury is seen in people who haven’t exercised in a while and overdo it without proper stretching of the tendon.
